Maintaining Your Cool (and warm)

Regular maintenance on your HVAC system will save you money in the long run.

It’s all too easy to put off thinking about your air conditioner and heater until one of them stops working. At this point it’s usually either very hot or very cold and the service calendars are filling up quickly with appointments to fix similar problems for scores of other people.

But much like having a car’s oil changed or going in for a routine physical check-up, regular check-ups for air conditioning and heating units are also important-for the longevity of the unit as well as for maintaining our own health and comfort levels. With this in mind, many air conditioning and heating companies provide affordable and easy to use service contracts for their customers.

“Air and heating units are easy to forget about when we’re not using them, so it’s nice to have a plan,” said Steve Hussey, owner of Hussey Bros., a 32-year-old heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) company in Sunnyvale. “The great thing about having a service contract in place is that if you do have a problem, you can call a company that you already have an established relationship with and trust."

A routine, preventative check-up usually occurs twice a year, once in the spring to check the air conditioning and once in the fall to check the heater. Wires are inspected, dirty or clogged filters are changed and an overall inspection is performed to see if anything further needs attention before the unit is put into seasonally heavy use. Scheduled check-ups are handy because the service company calls to remind you when you’re due so you don’t have to keep tract. Hussey Bros contracts are pre-paid and come with a discount on any additional work that is discovered during the check-up.

In addition to having a contract in place, there are other factors that can put you at ease when calling on a heating and air conditioning company. A quick check with the Better Business Bureau can tell you a lot about the company. Another place to get good information about how customers feel about the company is checking with an on-line consumer watchdog service list such as Angie’s List.

Hussey Bros. takes pride in their attention to customer service. Being rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and highly rated on Angie’s List is quite a tribute to their reputation. Being a long-time well established family-owned business puts customers at ease. Just knowing that should a problem arise, Hussey Bros. will be there to get the job done and to the customers satisfaction. The technicians at Hussey Bros. are tidy and courteous with their work and you can feel good about them coming into your home.

One of the newest products available through Hussey Bros. is the “My Temp” system. My Temp delivers both improved comfort and energy savings capability by providing room-by-room temperature control for residential forced-air HVAC systems. It saves energy by conditioning occupied rooms only as much as needed and by reducing temperature in every room and individually controls the airflow to every vent. My Temp can be easily installed into most existing homes without changing the HVAC system. The energy saving features of the My Temp System provides the controls needed for homeowners to reduce their heating and cooling energy consumption by up to 40 percent.

You may have seen the My Temp system on episodes of “Ask this Old House” in March 2009. Popular Science Magazine listed My Temp as one of the top 100 technological innovations of 2008, giving it the “Best of What’s New” award. Our customers who have purchased the My Temp system have been exceedingly pleased with the money they’ve saved on their energy bills and are raving about the even temperatures that they’re receiving in their homes.

With so many brands of heating and air conditioning products available, Hussey Bros is experienced to handle any make, model or age. They are a dealer of American Standard, which Steve believes is a very reliable and efficient product.  Hussey Bros. also installs air filtration systems that remove dust and allergens from the air. Inspecting duct work is also done just to ensure that the ducting is properly sealed to avoid leaking conditioned air. If the duct work is in poor condition, they are also able to remove and replace that as well.

“We’ve been offering high-quality sales, service, repairs and installations since 1977,” said Steve. “And our technicians really enjoy what they do. They are neat, polite and professional, things that are harder to come by in

the service industries today.” Hussey goes the extra step for his customers by offering competitive pricing and by prioritizing the elderly and families with small children when their heating or air conditioning units fail in extreme weather.

Leaving your comfort and health to chance is a sure path to problems down the road, whether it concerns seeing your doctor for a check-up or getting your heater and air conditioning units checked out. Put your mind at ease by scheduling an appointment with Hussey Bros today so that you can breathe easy tomorrow.
